Our Technology Roadmap

Within the framework of the 2050 Strategic Transition Plan, which is established “to produce the energy of future,” Tüpraş has also updated its digital strategies to maintain innovative and pioneering practices to fuel this strategic transformation with digital technologies and to adjust more rapidly to the future of work in a continuously changing environment.

Updated in line with the concept of “Interconnected,” which was first conceived in 2020, the strategies aim for operational transparency, a high level of automation, employee efficiency, and experience, and the advanced use of artificial intelligence and mobility by directly contributing to main corporate goals including operational excellence, efficiency, sustainability, low carbon, and technical and cyber safety.

Tüpraş closely follows local and international developments as part of its digitalization efforts. The company also continuously improves talent management, customer relations, supply chain management, and even auditing processes in light of technological advances, and pursues industry-leading work in digitalization.

Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence Activities

Tüpraş conducts a wide range of data analytics and artificial intelligence research.

We conduct comprehensive and innovative data analytics based on efficient data management and data science to process 650 million lines of data flowing daily through our 150.000+ sensors. The “Analytical Project Health and Return Metrics” platforms exhaustively measure the effectiveness and efficiency of our projects. On the other hand, over 200 projects on product, process, financial and trading analytics, predictive maintenance analytics, and optimization have been successfully completed. In 2022, Tüpraş projects on analytics and artificial intelligence generated a potential for efficiency equivalent to 237 million Turkish lira.

A capability maturity assessment was conducted for data deduplication, standardization of role and responsibility distribution, and stability in data quality and continuity. In 2022, a Governance Committee was established to spread the process across the Tüpraş structure.

Applications of Autonomous Robot Technologies

Within the scope of our roadmap on robotics, we encourage the use of the latest Industry 4.0 technologies on our production sites to cultivate an autonomous and sustainable operation that is based on our core value of “safety.” We employ artificial intelligence-powered autonomous robotics to undertake dangerous tasks in refineries, including measurements at significant heights. These applications facilitate repetitive tasks in risky processes, enabling our technical teams to utilize their skills in different areas.

Applications of Autonomous Robot Technologies

Tüpraş Robotics Team launched pilot projects on periodic controls of crude oil storage tanks, measurements, and other dangerous tasks around refineries in 2021 and spread these projects across the refineries in 2022.

The TÜBİTAK-supported, ATEX-certified RUVI OilDiver (In-Service Tank Bottom Inspection Robot) project is a first in Türkiye and one of the very few in the world.

Tüpraş has recently tested Spot, the four-legged smart robot developed by Boston Dynamics for remote-controlled use in production sites and, in 2022, completed trials on Crawler Robots that will provide a significant advantage in autonomous inspection on rough terrain, including tankage and off-site areas.

In line with our “Digital Refinery” goal, we had previously migrated our Tüpraş ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system, introduced in 2006 following the privatization, to the HANA Database (High-Speed In-Cache Processing) in 2016. In 2023, we launched the S/4 HANA Oil and Gas Transformation Project led by a team of global experts. Our efforts to incorporate international industry-leading best practices and processes into our company, as well as to establish a more sustainable corporate system architecture, are still ongoing.

Cultural Transformation Activities

One of the key goals of Tüpraş is to increase the number of data-literate employees in order to spread the culture of creating value from data across all business processes. To this end, a company-wide Data Literacy Program has been launched. The program encourages employees to take courses on visual design, data visualization, basic statistics, and digital awareness to use and analyze data more efficiently.
