We keep sustainability at the forefront in all our operations from investment decisions to processes. Since the launch of our first report in 2008, we have significantly improved our social, environmental and economic performance as part of our sustainability management program, in the last decade. We are proud to be included in the BIST Sustainability Index consecutively since it was first released in 2014.”

Tüpraş, Turkey’s largest company released its 2017-2018 Sustainability Report. In addition to its economical value added, Tüpraş maintained its leading position thanks to its pioneering practices in sustainability management. In 2008 for the first time in Turkey, the company presented a model project in terms of transparency and accountability with its sustainability report, prepared in compliance with the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) Standards. While providing a complete picture of the operations performed by Tüpraş between 1 January 2017 - 31 December 2018 in terms of sustainability, the report also reflects the results of projects implemented until today, since 2008.

“Sustainability is one of the main elements of our business model”
Highlighting the significant change in business and individual lives as a result of recent developments, such as population increase, climate change and rapidly emerging technologies, İbrahim Yelmenoğlu, General Manager of Tüpraş, said, “Unfortunately we are still far from claiming that these developments have brought equal yields for all countries. This fact requires us to develop a more comprehensive, more productive and sustainable development model, based on an innovative approach. The objective to improve the life standards of future generations can only be achieved by the collaboration of all stakeholders, mainly the business world, public entities and non-governmental organizations, around such model.”

Stating that Tüpraş has already determined its attitude towards such developments by a visionary approach, Yelmenoğlu said, “We have determined sustainability as one of the main elements of our business model. We keep sustainability at the forefront in all our operations from investment decisions to processes. Since the launch of our first report in 2008, we have significantly improved our social, environmental and economic performance as part of our sustainability management program, in the last decade.” Yelmenoğlu added, “As an energy company, increasing our environmental performance is one of our leading sustainability objectives as we are aware of the significance of climate change, which is a global problem. For this purpose, we decreased energy consumption intensity from 119.1 to 99.1 as a result of investments and projects between 2008 and 2018. We increased the amount of recycled water by 73% in 2018, compared to 2008. The period between 2008 - 2018 does also cover an important milestone in terms of innovation, which supports our efforts to combat climate change. We have invested approximately 290 million TL in works that have focused on value added and more environmentally-friendly product development, process innovation and digitalization operations together with our R&D center.”

Tüpraş is included in the BIST Sustainability Index for the 6th year in a row
Stating that Tüpraş is included in BIST Sustainability Index since 2014, the year the index was started, Yelmenoğlu said, “Once more, we have been recognized among the best performing companies in terms of corporate sustainability in Borsa İstanbul and have been included in the BIST Sustainability Index, for the 6th year in a row.”

Major accomplishments in sustainability practices since 2008 to present

Environment and Energy Management
We invested 2.3 billion TL in total to administrative and efficiency projects.
Through 479 energy efficiency projects, we achieved 34,480 TJ (Terajoule) energy savings, and reduced 2.4 million tons CO2e GHG emissions. As a result of these, we decreased energy intensity, by 20 points, which was 119.1 in 2008, to 99.1 as of 2018.
We placed a special emphasis on protection and efficient use of water sources. We started to meet water requirements of İzmit Refinery mainly with recycled wastewater instead of fresh water thanks to the urban wastewater recycling investment that we realized. Additionally, we have reduced the ratio of raw water used for processed crude oil by 36% since 2008, thanks to water efficiency and recycling practices that we have launched.
We have implanted approximately 160.000 saplings since 2008 in forestation projects that we initiated to preserve the natural life and support biodiversity. Thus, we managed to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 60.000 tons/year in the last 10 years.

Social Impact
Main components of our social performance are increasing the employment of women and gender equality, occupational health and safety, development of our employees and the social investments. For this purpose, between 2008 and 2018:

  • based on international initiatives such as UN Women - HeForShe and UN WEPs, we have continued to encourage employment of women while increasing the number of woman employees by 75%.

Economical value added
We are directly producing a value for Turkish economy with the products that we produce, tax revenues that we provide to the government and our financial performance while continuing our operations with the objective to meeting all petroleum products requirements of Turkey, since our foundation.
The main priorities to improve our indirect economic impacts are the investments in the field of
R&D, innovation and digitalization while supporting the local economy by local procurement:

  • Our main objective in R&D, innovation and digitalization is to secure energy requirements of the future generations as a prominent and innovative energy company that produces its own process technologies, products and services.
  • We have invested 286.5 million TL for our R&D projects.
  • Tüpraş R&D Center has completed 231 scientific publications, 85 patent applications and 22 patent registrations since its foundation in 2010.
  • We have spent 63% of our total procurement expenditures extracting the crude oil, amounting to 9.4 billion TL, through local product and service providers.
